Consumer Loans for Expats
Are you an expat living in the Netherlands and considering a consumer loan, such as a personal loan? There are certainly opportunities available. You can take out a loan for various purposes, including buying a car, financing a home renovation, or consolidating existing debts.
Eligibility for Expats
In general, the requirements for expats are similar to those for Dutch nationals. The key factor is that there must be sufficient financial room between your income and fixed expenses to cover the monthly repayments of the loan.
Lenders will assess:
Your income and that of your partner
Your fixed expenses, such as rent or mortgage payments
Your cost of living (based on standardized benchmarks depending on household composition and income level)
Additional expenses, such as car costs or childcare (if applicable)
Additional Requirements for Expats
Because consumer loans do not require collateral (unlike a mortgage), lenders place extra importance on your connection to the Netherlands. This means your residence status and how long you have been living and working in the country are key factors.
Less than 2 years in the Netherlands: Unfortunately, there are no loan options available
Between 2 and 5 years: Opportunities may be available if you own a home
More than 5 years: In most cases, loans are also possible if you are renting a property
Residence Permit
Your residence permit also plays an important role. If you have a temporary residence permit, the duration of the loan cannot exceed the validity period of your permit.
