Consumer Loans for Expats
Are you an expat living in the Netherlands and considering a consumer loan, such as a personal loan? There are certainly opportunities available. You can take out a loan for various purposes, including buying a car, financing a home renovation, or consolidating existing debts.
Eligibility for Expats
In general, the requirements for expats are similar to those for Dutch nationals. The key factor is that there must be sufficient financial room between your income and fixed expenses to cover the monthly repayments of the loan.
Lenders will assess:
Your income and that of your partner
Your fixed expenses, such as rent or mortgage payments
Your cost of living (based on standardized benchmarks depending on household composition and income level)
Additional expenses, such as car costs or childcare (if applicable)
Additional Requirements for Expats
Because personal loans are not secured by collateral, lenders place greater emphasis on your connection to the Netherlands. As a result, they assess a combination of factors when determining whether you qualify for a loan, including:
How long you have been living and working in the Netherlands
Your housing situation (renting or owning a home)
Whether you are from an EU or non-EU country
The type of residence permit you hold, if you are from outside the EU
Every situation is different. The final decision depends on the combination of these factors and the lending criteria of the individual lender.
Residence Permit
If you are from outside the EU and hold a temporary residence permit, the maximum loan term cannot exceed the validity period of your residence permit. In addition, you must be a homeowner in the Netherlands to be eligible for a personal loan.
